Mississippi Blues Trail
Eddy is honored to be united with his cousin, Lurie Bell at the T Bone Walker Festival.
The Harrington Family, ATOMIC H Records, Eddy and his cousins, Cary, Steve and Lurie Bell were honored with a Blues Marker in their hometown of Macon, Mississippi. The dedication and unveiling was in 2008 and the Mayor also proclaimed it, Eddy Clearwater Day in Macon. A Welcome Home Celebration brought tearful joy to the blues man who had not been home in 40 years. The government offices and schools were closed for the day and Eddy’s name proudly ran across the electronic billboard of the local bank across from the theater Eddy once went to when he was a kid.

Not only was there a celebration for Eddy, family, friends and fans, but joy in the celebration of Freedom where everyone could join together in the significant contributions of these Blues masters. “I once couldn’t sit in the seats on the main floor of the theater in Macon, Mississippi where I grew up and now they have recognized me with a special day and an electric sign with my name on it right across the street from the theater,” said Eddy.

Eddys thoughts on Chuck Berry
------------------------------------------------------------------
Here is an excerpt from a 2008 interview
with Eddy Clearwater by Tim Holek
for the Chicago Blues Guide

CBG: Chuck Berry was a huge influence on you. What was it about his music or his style of guitar playing that you fell in love with?
EC: He has a very unique style. The things he sung about (“working your finger right down to the bone/teacher won’t leave you alone”) was true to everyday life especially about teenagers going to school. His guitar playing and what he was singing about coincided so perfectly. I was just fascinated by his songs. I got to appear with him once at a club in a suburb of Chicago. He was quite a gentleman and he was funny too. The audience kept egging us on and they wanted me to sing one of his songs. Chuck said c’mon up and do it. Of all of his songs they wanted me to do Johnnie B. Goode. I said, “oh, no” but Chuck said go ahead, do it. So I did it after I got his permission.

CBG: You’ve been called a Chuck Berry imitator by fans and colleagues for years. How do you feel about that?
EC: To me, in a way, it’s a great complement. I put Chuck in very high esteem but then I also want people to know that there is another side of me. I’m not just an imitator. I like to think I have a sound of my own. I like writing songs in different styles like R&B and straight blues. “It would be an honor to play with Chuck Berry at Blueberry Hill” — I hope we can do that someday soon!

Between his slashing left-handed guitar work, his room-filling vocals, his self-defined "rock-a-blues" style (a forceful mix of blues, rock, rockabilly, country and gospel), his boundless energy and even his signature Indian headdress, Clearwater is among the very finest practitioners of the West Side blues working today.
